In a significant development for sustainable urban transport, the first two out of a dozen hydrogen-powered metro buses for the city of Porto are expected to arrive between late January and early February 2024. This information was disclosed by Metro do Porto on Friday.

Upon their arrival, these metro buses will undergo a comprehensive period of testing and driver training, scheduled to extend until April. During this time, necessary certification and approval procedures will be conducted in conjunction with Portugal's Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT).

Initially, there was a consideration to begin operations using provisional vehicles, but this plan was discarded. Metro do Porto explained that such a solution would necessitate adaptations taking more time than the arrival of the permanent buses themselves.

In September, the Port's city council and the Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto (STCP) had proposed a temporary measure. They suggested that the newly constructed metrobus lane along Avenida da Boavista be used by the existing 203 line until the hydrogen buses became operational.

The new metrobus line in Porto will eventually connect popular destinations such as Casa da Música to Praça do Império, a journey taking around 12 minutes, and onwards to Anémona in approximately 17 minutes. The project represents a significant investment, with the buses themselves costing around 29.5 million euros, while the overall construction of the metrobus infrastructure amounts to approximately 76 million euros.
