The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange alert for 11 districts on the mainland and the autonomous region of Madeira due to expected severe maritime conditions and snowfall. This heightened warning comes amid the impact of the Jana depression.

Districts like Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Coimbra, Faro, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, Setúbal, and Viana do Castelo, along with northern Madeira and the Porto Santo coast, face significant sea disturbances. Additionally, the districts of Castelo Branco and Guarda are under a similar alert due to anticipated snowfall.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been declared for several regions, including the Central and Eastern Azores, Vila Real and Viseu due to strong winds, and Évora, Portalegre, and Santarém in anticipation of heavy precipitation. In Bragança, the warning is for snow, while the Western Azores group prepares for maritime unrest.

The IPMA advises that from the 8th of February, wave heights off the west coast will range from 4 to 5 metres, which may rise to 5 to 6 metres the following day, with maximum sizes potentially reaching 10 metres. Wind conditions will be turbulent, particularly on the 8th, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour in coastal areas.

Snowfall is expected to start on the 8th February, primarily above altitudes of 1000 to 1200 metres, with the snowline rising to 1200 to 1400 metres by the 10th.

This weather alert is effective from 17:55 on the 7th to 23:55 on the 10th of February. The IPMA plans to provide updates no later than 19:00 on the 8th. In light of the extreme weather forecast, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) has cautioned the public about potential flooding and accidents.
