Carla Tavares, a member of the European Parliament representing the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS), has emerged victorious in the interim elections to lead the Federation of the Urban Area of Lisbon (FAUL). In a decisive election, Tavares garnered 71% of the votes, defeating Miguel Prata Roque, who obtained 29%. Out of the six thousand eligible party members, 2,402 cast their vote for Tavares, while 991 supported Roque.

These elections were conducted following the resignation of the previous president, Ricardo Leão. Leão stepped down amid controversy over policies related to the eviction of individuals benefiting from social housing, which had sparked significant debate.

Following her win, Carla Tavares, who previously served as the president of the Amadora Municipal Council before taking up her role as an MEP, expressed gratitude to the supporting militants and extended her appreciation for her opponent's contributions. She expressed hope that Miguel Prata Roque would continue to play an active part in improving the Urban Area of Lisbon.

Upon taking office, Tavares pledged to forge strong and capable candidatures for upcoming local elections, emphasising the importance of electing candidates who embody competence and are committed to sustainable and social development in their areas. "The FAUL will remain open to dialogue, maintaining proximity to its militants, local structures, and society," Tavares assured, highlighting a collaborative approach.

The new president also outlined her vision for the FAUL, focusing on enhancing internal cohesion and fostering unity among members and elected representatives. She aims to develop proposals that reflect the genuine needs of the population. Key priorities under her leadership include accessible housing, sustainable mobility, security, climate transition, and social justice.

Tavares stated her commitment to listening to the people, associations, and social actors to build inclusive and effective local government programmes. She stressed that the strength of the Socialist Party lies in its pluralism and respect for differences, aiming to work towards common goals despite diverse perspectives.
