The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has heightened its weather warnings, reflecting the adverse climatic conditions forecast from Friday to Sunday, 17 November. A cold depression, located north of Madeira, has induced significant weather changes over mainland Portugal.
Particularly affected are the southern and central regions, with Beja and Faro placed under orange alert for potential intense showers, thunder, and occasional hail until 18:00 on Friday. Post this period, these areas shift to a yellow alert until 21:00 on the same day. Concurrently, other districts such as Évora, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Setúbal, and Lisbon will also experience yellow alerts at various intervals throughout the day.
Heavy precipitation rates are expected, potentially reaching 10 to 20 mm per hour, with isolated cases possibly exceeding 20 mm. As such, the IPMA warns of possible recurring bouts of severe weather impact in certain locations until Sunday morning.

The forecasted weather patterns are anticipated to predominantly affect the regions of Baixo Alentejo, Algarve, Setúbal, Lisbon, and Santarém. These areas might also encounter extreme wind phenomena, underlined by the potential for urban flooding, river flooding, and landslips due to altered river flows.
In anticipation, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection has issued alerts about potential public safety hazards, such as contaminated potable water due to displacement of materials from rural fires, and road hazards caused by wind-borne debris and poorly secured structures.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to take precautionary measures, remain informed about the evolving conditions, and adhere to guidance provided by local authorities to mitigate weather-related risks.
