The Amadora-Sintra Hospital in Portugal is facing a significant challenge following the resignation of its General Surgery Department director, Paulo Mira, and the departure of ten surgeons. The decision to resign was reportedly triggered by the impending return of two physicians who had previously alleged malpractice within the department.

The Unidade Local de Saúde (ULS) Amadora/Sintra confirmed the departure of its medical staff and acknowledged the potential strain on its surgical services, indicating that measures are being taken to address the crisis. ULS anticipates disruptions and has stated it will notify relevant authorities, including the national emergency medical service, should urgent action be required.

Nuno Rodrigues, Secretary-General of the Independent Doctors' Union (SIM), expressed grave concern over the impact on patient care, highlighting the large population reliant on the hospital for surgical services. He warned that patients might need to be redirected to other already overburdened hospitals.

The director, according to Rodrigues, had been committed to modernizing and enhancing the service but found himself unable to resolve the current conflict, a situation exacerbated by what he describes as the hospital administration's inadequate response.

Joana Bordalo e Sá, president of the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM), criticised the administration's failure to fulfil promises to resolve the issues, consequently compromising patient care in the region. She cited poor working conditions, lack of resources, and insufficient management capacity as reasons for the director's resignation.

The development has also concerned Paulo Simões, president of the Southern Regional Council of the Order of Doctors, who lamented the loss of leadership and personnel. Following an October visit to the hospital, he observed that although functional units had been successfully established, the department was left in turmoil with the directors' departure.

The situation poses significant challenges to the continuation of surgical care, underlining the need for swift and effective solutions to minimize impact on healthcare delivery in the area.
